Lyons (Wayne County) was once the “Peppermint Capital of the U.S.”  In 1841 E.G. Hotchkiss moved his “essential oils” business to Lyons.  Here he processed the abundant locally grown peppermint plants into oils and other products.

“Peppermint Days” is a community wide festival which runs from July 12-14.  The whole village gets involved and tourists come from far and wide to check out “The Peppermint Village.”  Live music, plenty of food and family fun and even a tour of the original Hotckiss Building (where it all started) are on the menu for the event. A grand “Peppermint Parade” is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

Lyons is also famous for their murals.  Nearly a dozen large depictions of life in the village and the surrounding area are displayed on exterior walls thorough out  the downtown area.
